A-Level Maths Year 1 | AS Level

In A level maths, we believe that students learn best when their curiosity is encouraged and they have an opportunity for independent, in-depth exploration. To encourage this, students will learn as part of small groups where participation is encouraged.

A level maths is a challenging field of study, but A-level maths is an excellent qualification for your teen to gain. It opens up many fields of further study at university or in the work place.

Edexcel A-level Maths Year 1 (AS level) Comprises 2 Modules: Pure Maths 1 and Statistics and Mechanics 1.

At Arise Home Education partner with families to help them home educate for success. As a result we understand some families may only require help with one module. Therefore, you can sign up for the full AS level, or choose to sign up for just Pure Maths or just Statistics & Mechanics 1.

Pure Mathematics 1

In Pure Mathematics 1 students build those key mathematical skills in:

• Algebra
• Quadratics
• Equations and inequalities
• Graphs and transformations
• Circles
• Polynomials and binomial expansion
• Trigonometry
• Vectors
• Calculus
• Exponentials and Logarithms

These mathematical skills are key for students who wish to pursue further study in science and engineering. They also develop key mathematical thinking skills which are highly valued by employers. In studying Pure Mathematics students see the nuts and bolts of how everything else works!

Statistics & Mechanics Year 1

The A Level Maths course is ideal for students beginning their A Level Mathematics studies and focusing on mechanics and statistics. We will explore how mathematical models describe real-world motion, forces, probability, and data analysis.

In Mechanics & Statistics Year 1 students will study:

• kinematics,
• Newton’s laws,
• moments,
• probability distributions,
• hypothesis testing, and
• statistical modelling.

Alongside mastering calculations and techniques, students will develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, equipping them for further study and real-world applications.

Examination

A level mathematics is a 2-year course with an exam at the end of those two years. The examination is made up of 3 papers. Home educators would need to find an exam centre near them that allows students to sit Edexcel exams, be aware exam fees for A levels tend to be higher than iGCSE/GCSE exams.

A level Year 1/AS level Edexcel can no longer be sat as a stand-alone exam.

This course is eligible for USA High School Diploma & Transcript credit.  Students successfully completing this course will receive 1 high school math credit for each module.

A-Level Maths | Pure Mathematics Year 1 (AS Level) Course Details

In the class, we will complete Year 1 over the course of 30 weeks in our live online sessions.

Day & Time:

• Pure Maths: Tuesdays 12:30-1:10 pm & Thursdays 12:00-12:40pm  with Emma (Two 40-minute sessions each week.)
• Statistics & Mechanics: Fridays 10:30 am-12 pm with Hannah

Location: Zoom Meeting

Tutor: Emma & Hannah 

Required Materials:

• Pearson Edexcel AS and A level Mathematics Pure Mathematics Year 1/AS Textbook
• Edexcel AS and A level Mathematics Statistics & Mechanics Year 1/AS Textbook
• This scientific calculator (or similar).

Pre-requisites:  iGCSE Maths Year 1 & Year 2 or similar. Students should be 16+, or have a high skill level in Maths and/or exceptional Maths scores on GCSE Level Maths, or similar.

A-Level Maths allows a student to study for the exam, or to study the course as part of their high school diploma. This is perfect for students who require maths at a higher level.
