High School Art and Design Year 2 Course Description/Content
Art is a valuable subject and helps us to not only express ourselves but to understand and give meaning to our lives and the world around us. This class aims to inspire, engage and challenge the students, to develop their creativity and to help them think critically.
- Sketch Booking and Observational Drawing Skills: The students will explore the visual elements: Line, shape, colour, pattern, form, texture, and tone. The students, working to the theme of ‘Trash or treasure’ will use a variety of media to create drawings of items we throw away, including things like cans and wrappers. The students will be encouraged to explore mark making and use recycled materials to collage pages in their sketchbook and then draw on top. Through these practical tasks, the students will learn how the visual elements are used and overlap across expressive and design work. This will be further developed throughout the year, adding depth and character to their work.
- Portraiture: Using their drawing skills, the students will study their own faces and learn how to draw the proportions of the face, they will then create their own large self-portraits in charcoal, inspired by American photorealist artist Chuck Close.
- Graphic Design: In this unit, the students will create illustrations for a book cover, poster or packaging of their choice. They will learn about layout, typography, colour theory and the work of designer AM Cassandre.
- Landscape painting: Inspired by the work of the Scottish Colourists, the students will work in acrylic paint and mixed media to create landscape paintings of places from their travels and will learn about mood, composition and colour.
- 3D Jewellery Design: Taking inspiration from the colours, shapes and textures of sea life, sea creatures and plants from the sea, the students will follow the design process to create a wearable piece of design inspired by designer Peter Chang.
Throughout the year, the students will learn to evaluate and analyse artwork by other artists and offer constructive criticism to their peers. This is an important aspect of art and design. The students will also be asked to respond to artwork and give feedback audibly or in the form of a visual essay.
Included in the enrolment cost is a materials kit that will include all the materials the students will need for the course this year.
