DSLR Photography Year 2 for High Schoolers
For students who want to take their photography skills to a new level after year 1. Year 2 will challenge students to work to a whole new level of goal setting, self-reflection, leadership, and communication. All skills that will benefit them in whatever field they choose after school.
DSR Photography Year 2Course Highlights
- Further develop photography skills, with freedom to focus on their own preferred goals.
- Research careers in photography and the skills needed.
- Planning and executing an arts project for others, to develop leadership, communication, and practical skills
- Learning how to respond to and critique the work of others.
Photography Year 2 is an advanced, portfolio-based course structured around the requirements of the Silver Arts Award (Trinity College London).
Building on the foundational skills of Photography Year 1, students will build their technical skills, deepen their creative abilities, and develop a diverse but unified body of photographic work based on their own interests and vision.
We will examine how art expresses our worldview and provide a distinctly Christian framework for students to explore photography as a medium for expressing goodness, beauty, and truth.
Students will be encouraged to approach their photographic practice not merely as self-expression, but as thoughtful cultural engagement; attending carefully to the human condition, the complexity of modern life, and the glory of creation. Emphasis is placed on disciplined craftsmanship, careful critical reflection, and being a responsible artistic influence.
We will take inspiration from leading photographers from different fields, consider their unique contributions to the world of photography, and learn how we can borrow from their techniques and style.
By the end of the course, students will have assembled a professionally presented portfolio that demonstrates their creative and technical growth over the year, all while earning a nationally recognized qualification from Trinity College London.
Topics Include
- Produce a beautiful portfolio of work
- Investigate and critically analyze the work of other artists
- Reflect formally on their creative development
- Undertake leadership within an arts context (e.g., mentoring, exhibition support, collaborative projects)
Parents and Students, please note: In this photography course, students will be expected to share their own work with the class and comment and give feedback to their classmates. This is all done in an encouraging environment of mutual support.
Required Materials:
For this course, the only equipment you need is a DSLR camera and a 50mm f 1.8 lens. The tutor, Agnes Mitchell, recommends buying a used DSLR. The lens is the most important factor for image quality, so don’t feel you need to spend too much on the camera body. A used Canon (EOS Series in the UK or Rebel Series in North America) or Nikon (like the D3500) DSLR body is a great choice and offers excellent value for beginners.
When buying a used body, check that the shutter count is under 30,000, the buttons and screen are functional, and there are no major issues. For the lens, the 50mm f/1.8 is required—it’s affordable, versatile, and provides sharp, professional-quality images with its wide aperture. Buying a used lens is fine as long as it’s in good condition, with no scratches or autofocus problems.
