This new fortnightly High School Art and Design skills course will begin with some foundational drawing skills that will encourage the students to explore the visual elements: Line, shape, colour, pattern, form, texture, and tone. Through these practical tasks, the students will learn how the visual elements are used and overlap across expressive and design work. This will be further developed throughout the year adding depth and character to their work.

In our homes, we are surrounded by many objects old and new. The pupils will develop their drawing skills by collecting objects of their choice from around their home and create a series of still-life drawings in different media.

Next, using these drawing skills the students will study their own faces to learn how to draw the proportions of the face and draw their own self-portraits. To bring their understanding of portraiture to life the students will learn about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh and how he powerfully documented his life and created different moods through his use of colour and texture.

By taking inspiration from the built environment in which the students live they will experiment with line, pen & wash, and then create a collagraph print to create expressive repeat patterns for a wrapping paper design brief.

The natural world offers endless inspiration to artists and designers alike. With this in mind, the students will study the work of architect Gaudi and how he drew inspiration from nature to create stunning works of art and architecture. Using clay they will recreate a clay tile full of fascinating textures and form.

To finish our year and to tie in with the British literature course on Pride and Prejudice the pupils will study the work of hat design Philip Treacy and will design and make their own hat design.

Learning to evaluate and analyse artwork by other artists and offer constructive criticism to their peers is an important aspect of art and design. The students will also be asked to respond to artwork and give feedback audibly or in the form of a visual essay.

Included in the enrolment cost is a materials kit that will include all the materials the students will need for the course this year.
