iGCE Maths: Homeschooling UK Curriculum

Mathematics is a core subject for UK home educators during their secondary education. It is one of those subjects that for the majority of us is a must-have! However, it can also be one of the most stressful subjects for home educators and students alike.

I think every home school (including my own) has had tears over maths lessons. In the UK the different exam boards offer their own GCSE/iGCSE maths course. For this iGCSE Maths UK class at Arise Home Education, we will be following the Pearson Edexcel curriculum (which is in line with the national curriculum). This is due to Edexcel exams being, on the whole, easier to access local exam centres as home educators.

ying the Foundation for iGCSE Maths

What are the key skills required for starting iGCSE Maths? Knowing that your teen is ready for the step up to iGCSE maths can be challenging, and knowing how best to prepare a younger teen to be ready when the time is right can be challenging.

As a home educator, I have found it difficult to find a good curriculum for my younger teens. There are many good maths curricula for primary-aged children. But the UK’s early high school curriculum is harder to find. Therefore, we have worked hard to create a maths curriculum to prepare students for iGCSE maths.

Online iGCSE Maths Class for UK Students

International GCSE maths with Arise has two live online lessons a week. Both are 40 mins long. This will allow students to bring questions later in the week, but also not to have a maths overload that a longer maths class could bring. Homeschooled kids will be part of a small online class, where they can interact and play with the mathematical concepts. This approach allows lessons to be tailored to the individual students and their unique needs. These homeschool maths courses are perfect for students 13+.

About the iGCSE Maths Tutor

Emma, the class tutor, has a degree in mathematical physics and a passion for teaching mathematics. She has years of experience tutoring home-educated students. However, she also understands the struggles maths can bring. She believes her gentle manner will help students who are maths haters and those with maths anxiety to overcome their struggles.

If you home educate and are looking for an online Maths class geared toward an internationally recognised qualification then look no further.

Emma is an excellent teacher both engaging and enthusiastic, your kids will absolutely love her!

.Our eldest described Emma as ‘ the most patient maths teacher ever’ and our 14yr old is looking forward to doing maths with Emma in the near future. ~LD, Home Ed. Mum

Hannah, tutors maths and sciences. Hannah has a Master’s degree in Mathematical Physics from Heriot-Watt University and a PGDE from the University of Strathclyde. Working full-time as a tutor, Hannah is ready to guide students to a deeper understanding of the world and its Creator.

Course Structure and Information

Live Online Classes Where Students Are Individuals

In the classes, we will cover the Edexcel curriculum. At the end of the two years it takes to cover the content, students can choose to either sit the foundational paper, to achieve a grade 4 (equivalent to a pass in the old system), or the higher paper. This choice allows struggling learners not to be overwhelmed by the harder paper.

In class, we will go over examples, discuss the concepts, and use mathematical simulations and activities to help understand the concepts. There will also regularly be revision exercises to go back over ideas, to help students remember the ideas. We will also cover past papers as the exam approaches, looking in detail at model answers, to allow students to gain confidence in tackling the exam and understand how the mark scheme works.

The final exam can be sat by private candidates at exam centres across the UK, and consists of two papers. Both of these allow the use of calculators. This is not to be confused with the GCSE, which has three papers. The Edexcel iGCSE (9-1) follows the new grading system, where 9 is the equivalent of the old A* and a 4 is like a C.

This maths coursework covers the key concepts of mathematics required for further study in mathematics and the sciences, as well as a range of other subjects from business studies to further probability and statistics. It all gives key numeracy skills required in the world of work.
