A-Level Maths Year 1 | AS Level
In A-level Mathematics, we believe that students learn best when their curiosity is encouraged, and they have an opportunity for independent, in-depth exploration. To encourage this, students will learn as part of small groups where participation is encouraged.
A-level Mathematics is a challenging field of study, but A-level Maths is an excellent qualification for your teen to gain. It opens up many fields of further study at university or in the workplace. Even if a student is not pursuing a degree in mathematics, having an A-level on their C.V. will make them stand out.

Cambridge International AS/A-level Maths Year 1 course highlights:
Pure Mathematics 1
In Pure Mathematics 1, students build those key mathematical.
Topics include:
- Algebra
- Quadratics
- Equations and inequalities
- Graphs and transformations
- Circles
- Polynomials and binomial expansion
- Trigonometry
- Calculus
These mathematical skills are key for students who wish to pursue further study in science and engineering. They also develop key mathematical thinking skills, which are highly valued by employers. In studying Pure Mathematics, students see the nuts and bolts of how everything else works!
Mechanics
In this part of the course, students will study mechanics. We will explore how mathematical models describe real-world motion, forces, power, and work.
Topics include:Â
- Kinematics,Â
- Newton’s laws
- Moments
- Momentum
Alongside mastering calculations and techniques, students will develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, equipping them for further study and real-world applications. This module will also be highly beneficial to any students studying physics or mechanical engineering.
A Level Maths Objectives & Outcomes
Students will develop fluency in algebraic manipulation, calculus, and mathematical modelling. They will learn to apply mathematics to physical situations, interpret data, and evaluate assumptions within models.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Solve unfamiliar problems using logical reasoning and mathematical techniques
- Apply calculus and algebra to model real-world and physical systems
- Analyse data and probability models critically
- Reflect on mathematics as a consistent and discoverable system rooted in God’s design
Topics Include:
- Quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, and circular measure
- Trigonometry and series
- Differentiation and integration
- Algebra, logarithmic, and exponential functions
- Numerical methods, vectors, and differential equations
- Complex numbers
- Mechanics: forces, equilibrium, kinematics, momentum, Newton’s laws, energy, work, and power
- Statistics: data representation, permutations and combinations, probability, and discrete random variables
- Regular review, investigations, and exam preparation
Examination
The AS level exam is sat at the end of year 1 with the two papers: Pure Mathematics 1 and Mechanics. The after year 2 the A2 year exam is sat, comprising of Pure Mathematics 3 and Probability and Statistics 1. The final grade is taken as a combination of the grades over the two years.
This is a demanding academic course requiring regular practice and independent study. Mechanics and statistics involve interpreting real-world data and physical contexts.
This course is eligible for USA High School Diploma & Transcript credit. Students successfully completing this course will receive 2 high school math credits.
