Scottish Gaelic at Home: Module 1 – Unlocking the Richness of Scottish Gaelic

From day one, in this self-paced, family-oriented course, we’ll help you build language routines (a set of phrases that you will make a habit of using at specific times of day) that seamlessly integrate Gaelic into your daily life. Each lesson will focus on a different part of an average family’s day, and from a selection of phrases you can build a language routine that fits your family.  From when you wake up, leave the house, share meals, or head to the park, we’ll start to add a second language into each part of the day. These routines will start with a few simple phrases at key moments, and gradually expand as you gain confidence, making daily conversations in Gaelic a natural part of your life.  You will receive a quizlet pack with audio files for each topic, so that you can learn the pronunciation of the phrases easily as you are on the go.

Scottish Gaelic at Home: Module 1 – Unlocking the Richness of Scottish Gaelic

Gaelic is one of the UK’s 4 Celtic languages and one of Europe’s oldest languages, once spoken by all as far south as Cumbria it has a captivating history and culture.  Still spoken by a close-knit and vibrant community of natives and learners, Gaelic carries a deep sense of identity, unlocks much of Scotland’s oral traditions, history, and is the key to understanding our awe-inspiring landscapes.  For example, Gaelic has well over 100 words for hill/mountain, and  Scotland’s many Gaelic place and landform names are highly descriptive and/or hint at history or folklore tied to the area. Your family will love the Speak Scottish Gaelic Module 1 self-paced course.

The Gaelic language is a key to understanding the history and culture of Scotland.

The Gaelic language is a key to understanding the history and culture of Scotland, at one time spoken by everyone throughout Scotland it is a carrier of much traditional knowledge.  There is still a vibrant Gaelic-speaking community, and Gaelic speakers are in demand in many job sectors.

The Gaelic at Home elf-paced course offers a unique approach to language learning, designed to be experienced together as a family. Unlike traditional courses, this program encourages parents and children to learn Gaelic side by side, starting right from the beginning. This isn’t a course for children to tackle alone, but rather one where both parents and children engage in the learning process together of developing a bi-lingual home.

From day one, we’ll help you build language routines (a set of phrases that you will make a habit of using at specific times of day) that seamlessly integrate Gaelic into your daily life.

Real-World Speaking Opportunities

One common challenge with traditional language courses is the lack of real-world speaking opportunities, which leads to an ability to recognise words, but not to actually use them. This course solves this by ensuring you’re speaking the language every day, (contextual learning) and the consistent practice of repeating phrases on a daily basis will lead to greater fluency over time.

Additionally, this course features a variety of songs and games, which have been proven to boost language retention. Studies show that learners who incorporate songs into their practice are more than twice as likely to succeed. The repetition within games keeps the learning process engaging and fun, providing a powerful motivator to keep going.

This course will also incorporate cultural elements using the language as a key to understanding Scottish Gaelic culture.  So some of our songs will be silly ones while others will be traditional ones, that have been passed down through the generations in Scotland.
