In this live class we will explore Tudor England through the life of William Shakespeare and the Georgian Era through the life of Jane Austen. We will bring each of their lives into historical context by learning about 30+ other famous people that were alive (or had dramatic influence) in each of the time periods. By creating a dinner party where the guests are famous people of the era, students will learn about historical events, society, culture, and current events as well as the science and philosophy of the day.
Each semester students will research a variety of famous people including:
- Authors/Philosophers
- World Leaders
- Artists
- Musicians/Composers
- Christian Evangelists/Theologians/Missionaries/Humanitarians
- Social Activists
- Scientists
- Explorers
- and more
Through hands-on activities, students will create a dinner party including a guest list, menu, activities, music, and more. Each student will present their culminating project in a class presentation. And, if you choose, you can organize your own event where people attend your dinner party in person and take on the role of a famous figure from the guest list. This extra effort is perfect for students needing a senior thesis/culminating studies project if they are keen on further study in history or literature.
This dinner party concept for each semester’s main project allows for much creativity.
Some students have enjoyed organizing military greats to meet and share war stories over pub food. Others have organized multi-course meals with music and jesters to entertain high-society aristocrats from all over the world. The options are limited only by the student’s creativity.

My daughter participated in this class for the Spring 2024 semester, and did it in conjunction with the British Literature class. She enjoyed this class, as well as found it challenging. I really appreciated this class being a great introduction to a college-style class structure, which gave her practice in managing a week’s worth of work and a cumulative final project. We were able to create a costume dinner party for friends and family that incorporated so many elements from the class, as well as social and etiquette skills. So appreciated having this class as a jumping off point for an immersive Georgian era semester.
