Great Ideas For Add-On Activities

Tutors have seen some great ideas for add-on activities to gain honours credit for courses. A favorite of my students is to host a Georgian Tea Party.  They planned a high tea where they invited friends and family to discuss the social customs of the time while enjoying traditional treats like scones and cucumber sandwiches.  Those invited were asked to take on roles of the famous people studied during the online class. Students also shared recipes and anecdotes as they transported everyone back to the refined world of Georgian society.

Another fun idea is for teens to write a letter to a historical figure from the period. Let your teen put themself in the shoes of a teenager living in Georgian Britain and pen a letter to someone like Jane Austen or Joseph Haydn, or even John Wesley, sharing their thoughts on revolutionary ideas and the impact they had on society. this activity helps students delve into the important issues of the era in a creative manner.

Teens can express their creativity through art, and create Enlightenment-Inspired Artwork that reflects the themes of reason, science, and nature from the Age of Enlightenment. Fun Activities for History Class: Victorian England Lessons That Bring Dickens to Life

Immerse students in the world of Victorian England by engaging in activities that bring the works of Charles Dickens to life. Character exploration is one of the different ways to deepen understanding of Dickens’ iconic figures.  In the digital classroom setting, tutors encourage students to create character profiles for characters such as Ebenezer Scrooge, Oliver Twist, or Miss Havisham, embodying their perspectives and motivations. By stepping into the shoes of these characters, students can gain a greater appreciation for the complexities of Dickens’ storytelling.  The British Literature Year 2 course does just that and is a perfect companion course for high school students taking the Victorian Era British History course.

Exploring Victorian England

During the history lessons, teens will embark on a journey through Victorian London. Explore key locations from Dickens’ stories such as the foggy streets of London, bustling markets, and more. By visually experiencing these historic settings, students can not only better visualize the world in which Dickens’ characters lived and interacted, but they will also grasp the importance of the current events of the Victorian era and the famous people who lived during Charles Dickens’s lifetime. This immersive experience can enhance their understanding of the social and economic issues prevalent during the Victorian era.

For students taking Year 2 British Literature, we love to encourage creativity with creative writing activities inspired by Dickens’ style and themes. Students may choose to craft their own short stories set in Victorian England, incorporating elements of mystery, social injustice, or redemption. By emulating Dickens’ rich storytelling and vivid descriptions, students can hone their writing skills while exploring the themes and motifs that are central to Dickens’ works.

Additionally, themed discussions in the Victorian Era British History course can foster meaningful conversations around the social issues of the Victorian era, connecting them to the themes present in Dickens’ novels. Students will enjoy group discussions that delve into topics such as poverty, class inequality, and the impact of the Industrial Revolution.  This often prompts students to draw parallels between the past and present further solidifying key concepts for the period of history they study.

Fun Activities for History Class: Engaging Teens with Modern History

In today’s fast-paced digital world, it can be a challenge to engage teens with historical figures from the past. However, by incorporating interactive and creative activities, our tutors can bring key figures like Jane Austen and C.S. Lewis to life for a new generation of learners. Dive into the lives of Jane Austen and C.S. Lewis through literature study as well as exploring their lives historically and within the era they lived. By incorporating the idea of contextual history and looking at the lives of famous people and important events around the world, educators can spark interest in the time periods in which these famous authors lived.

By creating a space for open dialogue and exploration of these authors’ most famous works, older kids can gain a deeper understanding of the impact a historical character had on British culture and beyond.  Students get to study the French Revolution, World War I, and World War II from a unique vantage point. Students even get a glimpse into important American history of the period like the early days of the Civil Rights Movement.

Additionally, these project-based courses offer an opportunity to let famous people of the era interact with one another by creating a dinner party and considering the thoughtful questions they might have asked one another around the dining table. This allows students to approach history from a unique vantage point based on key events and figures from modern British history that make learning interactive and exciting.  Because our online classes are limited to small groups of about 10-12 students, everyone gets the change to participate and share their knowledge each step of the way.

Activities for Your Teen’s Learning Style

Students learn in various ways.  Encouraging creative projects where teens can reimagine historical moments through their favorite famous person’s perspectives, can also be a great way to engage them with history beyond the timelines of Austen and Lewis. By allowing students to use their imagination, our tutors can provide effective ways to help teens develop a deeper appreciation for the time periods in which Austen and Lewis lived.

Fun Activities for History Class: Learning History Contextually

Incorporating project-based learning into British History studies is a great addition to homeschooling high school. It can provide students with a perfect way for a deeper understanding of the historical context in which great works of literature were written. By engaging in hands-on activities that bring the time period to life, students can not only connect with the material on a personal level but also gain a greater appreciation for the social issues and cultural norms of the various eras included in our British History courses.

One way to immerse students in the historical context is to have them reenact famous scenes from literature or plays. By stepping into the shoes of characters such as Pip from Great Expectations or Porche from Merchant of Venice, students can better grasp the societal expectations and challenges faced during these time periods. Another added bonus is to organize mock interviews where students take on the roles of characters can allow them to delve into the motivations and backgrounds of these individuals, shedding light on the complexities of the era.

Activities for UK Exam Prep & US Qualifications

These are great activities that provide richness and depth to both literature and history are fun for co-op learning groups or family time learning, and help them prepare well for UK Exams are add richness to their US Qualifications.

To provide students with a visual representation of the famous people and the historical events that shaped each era, tutors offer them the opportunity to create a visually attractive and interactive timeline of each era studied. By mapping out key moments in the famous author’s life alongside major events in Britain, students can gain a clearer understanding of how external factors influence writing. Furthermore, compiling this timeline-based digital scrapbook allows them to feature artwork, quotes, and facts about the era. It is one of the best ways for students to present their findings in a creative and engaging manner, showcasing their knowledge of the time period.
