Beginning German
For Autumn 2026
This beginning German course introduces first-year students to the German language, focusing on basic communication skills, cultural understanding, and basic faith-based vocabulary. By the end of the beginning German class, students will be able to handle simple conversations, understand essential grammar, and discuss elements of their faith in German.
This High School German course is a beginner’s course for those wanting to consider the iGCSE German Exam in future years. However, it is eligible for 1 high school World Languages credit on a USA Qualifications transcript.
Beginning German Course Details
Age: 12-16
Day & Time: Mondays 2-3:30 pm GMT (Two 40-minute sessions with a short break in the middle.)
Location: Zoom Meeting
Tutor: Bella Tanzer
Required Materials: Families do not need a curriculum as we are working with online-based material. I regularly use worksheets that I send to the students, so access to a printer would be great.

Beginning German Objectives and Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to introduce themselves and others, discuss
daily routines, navigate common situations such as appointments or shopping, and talk
about family, leisure, and the weather. Students will also gain an understanding of cultural
traditions and holidays in the German-speaking world. This course builds a solid foundation
for further German studies and helps students communicate confidently in basic German.

- Appointments
- Orientations
- Family
- Eating and leisure
- The weather
- Clothing
- Cultural traditions in the German-speaking world
- Talking about Christmas and Easter
- Talking about faith
Beginning German, a KS3/Pre-iGCSE high school course, will allow students to gain confidence in social situations that correspond to a beginner level of German vocabulary and pronunciation, which is typically found in a high school year 1 course. Students will learn German through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This will be done in live, online sessions as small groups or the entire class together.
Live courses and homework assignments will include a variety of fun educational resources to reinforce the learning in the weekly live sessions. Sample lesson here. Students will also be set weekly work to complete prior to the next class session, and are encouraged to use the things learned each week at home.
In addition to the weekly homework, there will be:
- Weekly quizzes
- Project work
- Presentations
