Course Details
The National 5 Applications of Maths Year 1 course provides a practical approach to mathematics, focusing on applying numeracy skills to real-world situations. Students will develop confidence in financial literacy, data analysis, measurement, statistics, and problem-solving. The course integrates engaging investigations, hands-on activities, and everyday applications, helping learners see the relevance of maths in daily life and decision-making.
In the class, we will complete the math curriculum over two semesters (30 weeks total) in our live online sessions.
Age: 14-16
Day & Time: Wednesdays 12:30-2 pm UK Timezone (Two 40-minute sessions each week.)
Location: Zoom Meeting
Tutor: Hannah Smith
Prerequisite:
- No formal prerequisites, but a basic understanding of numeracy and everyday maths concepts is recommended.
- KS3 Maths or equivalent preferred
Required Materials:
- National 5 Applications of Maths Textbook. No additional workbooks are required.
- Notebook and graph paper
- Access to basic spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets, or similar)

- Maths kit (includes ruler, protractor, and compass)

National 5 Applications of Maths Course Highlights
In Nat 5 Applications of Mathematics, we will learn and strengthen the key mathematical skills. We will cover:
- Practical investigations such as supermarket price comparisons, cooking on a budget, and container packing challenges.
- Development of critical financial skills, including currency conversion, interest rates, and income analysis.
- Emphasis on interpreting and presenting data, with statistical diagrams, line of best fit, and risk analysis.
- Real-world applications like scale drawings, navigation exercises, and time management challenges
National 5 Applications of Maths Course Objectives & Outcomes
Students will learn to select and carry out appropriate calculations, interpret measures, and justify their decisions using logical reasoning. They will gain confidence in comparing data, analysing financial positions, and applying statistical methods to investigate trends.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Solve practical problems involving measurement, scale, and quantities.
- Make informed financial decisions and interpret numerical information in context.
- Analyse and present data clearly using diagrams, charts, and statistical methods.
- Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills transferable to further study and everyday life.
Nat 5 Applications of Mathematics Topics Include:
- Practical numeracy and calculation skills
- Reading and interpreting scales and measurements
- Making and justifying decisions using maths
- Financial skills (income, budgeting, best deals, currency, interest rates)
- Ratio, proportion, and quantity calculations
- Data handling, risk, and comparing data sets
- Statistical diagrams, graphs, and line of best fit
- Measurement, scale drawing, and tolerance
- Navigation and time management
- Real-life investigations and problem-solving activities
This class is geared toward students 14-16, but is equally open to younger students who are advanced in their maths skills or older students taking maths a bit slower. Students aged 14+, following the US Qualifications model, are able to put this course on a transcript as proof of their maths education level as ‘Pre-Algebra’.
Nat 5 Applications of Mathematics, Online Class
Classes will be interactive, and due to the live nature of the classes, they will be tailored to the individual needs of the students. We will use a number of interactive technologies to help gain an understanding of the concepts of mathematics.
