The Arise Home Education Conference 2023 was an in-person conference held in March 2023 in Falkirk, Scotland.  Audio recordings, slide decks, and additional information from the conference are available to anyone interested. It’s known as the ‘goodie bag’ or ‘swag bag’. Once you make your purchase you will be given access to the drive where you can download each session’s audio file and slide deck.

Arise Home Education Conference 2023 Speaker Bios:

David Mitchell

David is a husband, father, missionary, pastor, and music teacher who is thankful for Jesus. He loves his family, the people of God and the mission of Jesus. He is particularly inspired by every person crazy enough to consider home education – especially his wife, Agnes, who he has been honoured to support as the primary home educator in their household. He enjoys mountain biking, reading, street hockey, and playing music. 

Ministry and Home Education Experience

David and Agnes met in Edinburgh, served a church in David’s Canadian hometown for fifteen years, then sensed a call from God to Scotland, coming here in 2015. From 2015-18 he studied full time and ministered in churches of various denominations throughout Scotland. Since 2018 he has pastored Connect Church, Kirkcaldy, an Apostolic Church affiliated with the Evangelical Alliance and Affinity networks. His role includes government engagement on faith related issues behalf of the Apostolic Church. He and Agnes have been involved in starting a home education coop in central Scotland and an annual camp week for Evangelical home education families.

Emma is mum to seven children. She enjoys great books, hiking in the beautiful Scottish hills and woods, swimming in lochs, and a good cup of tea. As well as wonderful literature, Emma has a passion for science and maths, and looks in wonder at God’s creation.

 Home Ed. Experience

Emma is currently educating her four oldest children, along with her two toddlers and a baby. They have always home educated. Through the high school years, she has taught maths, sciences, and English. Also, Emma is actively involved in leadership within the home ed. community and has taught at home ed. coops for a number of years.

Professional Degrees & Experience

Emma has an honours degree in Mathematical Physics from the University of Edinburgh – Scotland

Brenda Bartlett

Brenda lives in Glasgow with her husband, Paul and their 7 children, ranging in age from 5 to 17. She has home educated from the start and now her oldest child is finished studying at home and is in college. 

Brenda enjoys cooking, being outdoors and crafting. 

 Home Ed Experience

Brenda does a learn as you live style of learning and likes to think of everything and anything as a potential opportunity to learn and grow.

Professional Degrees & Experience

Brenda studied in hospitality and catering originally but her heart has always been for raising a family, which The Lord has graciously made possible. She has been part of different home school co ops over the years and enjoys to hear about other peoples experiences in their journey. 

Suzanne Simpson

Suzanne lives in the Scottish Borders with her husband and 5 children. She is home educating the younger four and the eldest is working to save for college. She loves reading, gardening, foraging, wild swimming, crochet and many other little hobbies (when she has time.)  

Home Ed Experience

Suzanne has been home educating for just over 9 years and is active in several different home education groups including an outdoor based coop that she runs in the Borders.  Suzanne uses mostly an eclectic style to home educate her children using parts of Sonlight, Charlotte Mason and Thinking Tree with a focus on sound Bible teaching. 

Professional Degrees & Experience

She is currently a full time mum but has worked in residential care homes and a nursery where she earnt her NVQ 2 and 3 in care of the elderly and NVQ 3 in childcare. 

Shannan is a wife, mum, and saved-by-grace, child of The King. Her home base for the last 8 years has been Scotland, where she home educates her two kids (ages 14 & 17). She is a classical style home educator living out her God-breathed dream of raising her family in Europe.

Home Ed Experience 

Shannan is passionate about many things, especially helping others learn on location using the world as their classroom. She encourages students & parents alike to pursue their God-breathed dream, no matter what it is! 

Professional Degrees & Experience

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, USA. She teaches live, online high school home ed. courses at True North Homeschool Academy and produces home education curriculum and family travel resources on her website Captivating Compass.

Agnes Mitchell

Agnes Mitchell has home educated for 16 years and has 4 kids (2 of which have graduated and gone to college), with a range of diagnoses from dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, to ADHD, sensory processing and written output disorder. 

 Home Ed Experience 

Although these diagnoses can pose some challenges she also celebrates and focuses on the amazing strengths and gifts her children have, especially their creativity.  She has tried a wide range of therapies and interventions, some of which did nothing and some of which were life changing.  

Professional Degrees & Experience

She is currently writing an honours thesis on empowering parents to help children with learning challenges.  Agnes also has a huge interest in natural supplements to help the brain and has researched and tried pretty much every natural remedy available, some!!  Agnes also has degrees in theology and Scottish Gaelic and does photography and teaches music in a home business and teaches Scottish Gaelic in primary schools.

Esther McDermott

Esther loves people and seeks to encourage others to live authentic relationships the way God intended. She loves hospitality and serving others in practical ways as part of creating community as close as possible to what we see in the book of Acts. She is passionate about teaching the next generation the ways and character of God, both at home, in children’s ministry at church and youth work.

Home Ed Experience 

Esther is in the 18th year of home schooling with the help of The European Academy for Christian Home-education. Three of her children have graduated, while the younger three are still educated at home. 

Professional Degrees & Experience

Esther trained and worked as a paediatric nurse, a district and dialysis nurse. Before getting married, she spent a few years working with an international missionary organisation. Being an entrepreneur at heart, she also ran her own business for 9 years.

Chris McDermott

Chris was saved at the age of 20, whilst studying Geology at university. He loves the great Scottish outdoors, thinking out of the box and inventing new practical solutions. He has a heart to help and support marriages and families, loves the Word of God, hearing the voice of God, and sharing it to encourage others.

 Home Ed Experience

Chris is a passionate geologist and hydrogeologist and loves painting, but his main hobby is loving his wife and six children.

Professional Degrees & Experience

Chris is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh, School of Geoscience, has led the development of a number of MSc programs both in the UK and Germany, and has many years of experience in education in the secular world and the Christian home education world.

Nicki Bradwell

Nicki lives in Scotland and home educates her very active 9-year-old son full time. She enjoys gardening (growing fruit & veg), hen keeping, foraging, reading, crafts, cooking, and drawing. 

 Home Ed Experience

She home educates in a Wild & Free and Charlotte Mason style with lots of kinaesthetic learning including experiments, model making, baking, living books, art, and many hours outdoors playing and doing nature study. Nicki has a passion for nature and God’s creation.

Professional Degrees & Experience

Nicki has an honours degree in Printed Textile design (specialising in screen printing for interiors) from DJCAD in Dundee and a PGDE in Education (Secondary Art & Design teaching) with 11 years teaching experience. Nicki now teaches Art a few days a month at a Montessori nursery working with 3-6 year-olds, a monthly art class for local home education group and she runs a weekly nature and art club called Wee Seedlings for 3-9 year olds in Fife.
