This iGCSE Accounting (Edexcel) Year 1 course introduces students to the essential principles of financial record-keeping used by businesses around the world. Through step-by-step instruction, students learn how financial transactions are recorded, organized, and reported using professional accounting systems, including double-entry bookkeeping, trial balances, bank reconciliation, and the preparation of financial statements. 

In the class, we will complete the maths curriculum over two years in our live online sessions. Year 1 and Year 2 are offered separately.

Day & Time: Tuesdays 11 am-12:30 pm UK Timezone (Two 40-minute sessions each week.)

Location: Zoom Meeting

Tutor: Judy Thrasher

Prerequisite: KS3 Year 3 Maths, or equivalent

  • Access to basic spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets, or similar)
  • this scientific calculator (or similar),
  • Accounting ledger notebook or lined notebook
  • Graph paper
  • Pencil, ruler, eraser
  • Highlighters for revision and key terms
  • Access to Printer for printing past exam papers
  • A4 binder for notes and past exam papers

IGCSE Accounting Course Details

This live online course follows the Edexcel International GCSE Accounting (9–1) specification. The course prepares students for both exam papers while also building practical financial literacy through regular problem-solving and interpretation of financial data. Students practice preparing and analyzing accounts similar to those used in real businesses, helping them understand how financial information supports decision-making. 

By the end of the 2-year course (year 2 planned for 2027-28), students will have a strong foundation in accounting terminology, procedures, and analysis, preparing them for further study in A-Level Accounting, Business, Economics, or Finance, while also developing valuable life skills such as managing money, understanding business performance, and interpreting financial reports.

This course is designed for home education students preparing for the Edexcel International GCSE Accounting qualification as well as learners interested in developing practical business and financial literacy skills, pursuing the USA Qualification.

iGCSE Accounting Course Objectives & Outcomes

The primary objective of this iGCSE Accounting course is to help students understand how businesses record and manage financial information. Students will learn the systems used by accountants and business owners to track income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. Throughout the course, teens develop the ability to apply accounting principles accurately and confidently using real-world examples and exam-style questions.

By the end of the 2-Year course, students will be able to:

  • Apply double-entry bookkeeping to record business transactions
  • Prepare trial balances and financial statements for sole traders and partnerships
  • Identify and correct accounting errors
  • Perform bank reconciliation statements
  • Calculate and interpret key accounting ratios
  • Understand how financial data is used to evaluate business performance

Students will also develop important analytical and problem-solving skills required for the Edexcel iGCSE examinations. These include interpreting financial information, evaluating business results, and explaining accounting decisions clearly using correct terminology.
