iGCSE English First Language Course Details
This iGCSE English First Language course is a rigorous, skills-focused homeschool English program built around the Collins English First Language Student Textbook (2025 edition) and Companion Workbook, fully aligned with the Cambridge specification. Students develop advanced reading comprehension, formal writing, grammar accuracy, and exam technique through structured lessons that progress from foundational language skills to full exam-style responses.
Because the Cambridge First Language English exam uses unseen texts rather than set literature, this course focuses on analysing a wide range of passages and producing clear, effective writing for different purposes, audiences, and formats. Students complete guided practice, workbook exercises, and timed writing tasks to build the confidence and precision required for success in the iGCSE examination.
However, at Arise, we feel there is great value in reading full texts of great literature. Selections from a supplemental reading list will be included throughout the course. Some of the choices will be books included on the English Literature exam. By including quality literature in their English language studies, students are well-prepared for the increased rigor of reading full-texts required in British Literature Comp and composition Year 1 and Year 2, where they will continue to practice the skills learned in this one-year English Language course.
iGCSE English First Language Course Highlights
- Built directly on the Collins 2027 Student Book & Workbook for preparation for the Cambridge iGCSE English First Language exam in future years.
- Strong Writing Instruction.
- Supplemental literature assignments based on full texts of great literature.
We recommend students wait until at least 16 to sit this exam to ensure further development of their critical thinking and analytical skills.
iGCSE English First Language Course Objectives & Outcomes
By the end of this one-year course, students will be able to analyse unseen fiction and nonfiction texts with accuracy, identify key ideas and language effects, and organise information clearly in written responses. They will understand the basics of how to write structured compositions for different purposes and audiences, including directed writing, narrative, descriptive, and argumentative tasks, using correct grammar, punctuation, and varied vocabulary. Students will learn to plan, draft, edit, and improve their work, adapt tone and style as required, summarise complex passages, and complete exam-style reading and writing tasks confidently under timed conditions.
Students will have a solid foundation on which to build in future classes, such as British Literature & Composition Year 1 & Year 2, and more.
Parents, please note: Students needing accommodations for exams will want to make these accommodations known at registration, allowing the tutor to assist in finding a path of success for this written exam.
